The cows with the window on the stomach

L ' bovine spongiform encephalopathy , better known as the disease of mad cow disease is a chronic neurological disease that affects cattle and is transmitted to humans through infected meat. Great media coverage took place in the 1990s (after the discovery of the first case, in 1986, in Great Britain) and in the early 2000s.

The disease is caused by one from a protein and comes from the diet fed to the animals. Since the outbreak of the mad cow scandal , especially in the last ten years, much more attention has been paid than in the past to control and prevention. And it is precisely due to prevention, the initiative that has led some Swiss researchers to experiment with a technique that is at least original, that has made discussing beyond the research world, especially the animalist world.

Fourteen cows have been equipped with a sort of porthole on the stomach , which allows to take, directly from the digestive apparatus of the beast, the food subjected to digestion process, and subject it to analysis to create a more balanced diet.

Technically, what researchers need to do is simply unscrew a cap and take the sample to be analyzed from the cow's rumen . The experts assure that for the insertion of the cannula (about twenty centimeters deep) and of the " window " on the body of the cattle, the animals have been subjected to anesthesia and, the same researchers claim that also during the examination procedure, the cows do not feel any discomfort.
