Biological pacemakers: within three years they could replace those used until now

The pacemaker is a device designed to treat brachycardias of the slow heartbeat, allowing it to increase the beating in order to meet the oxygen demands of the human body. This device is a small metal casing containing an electronic circuit and a battery. It has the task of constantly monitoring the heart, and sending an electrical impulse able to stimulate the heart muscle, if the rhythm is slowed or irregular. When we talk about pacemakers , we refer to a three-part pacing system : a pulse generator (heart of the pacemaker) of metal, containing an electronic circuit and a battery. An electro catheter (insulated wire), which conducts the electrical impulse from the pacemaker to the heart, to regularize the heart rate.

The third component (which is not implanted in the human body) is the programmer, a special computer, located at the hospital or clinic where the patient was operated. The nurse or doctor uses this computer to monitor pacemaker operation, and if necessary, adjust the settings.

It could be a gene to permanently send the pacemaker used until now. In the future it is expected that the human body will self-repair itself, thanks to the transplantation of genes. The research was carried out on some laboratory pigs, suffering from a complete heart block. Using a catheter (a non-invasive procedure) to the guinea pigs, the TBX18 gene was injected , and after a couple of days it was noticed that the gene had reached the heart, increasing the heartbeat, and that the rhythm had remained constant in the subsequent 14 days of monitoring, compared to untreated piglets.
